TAIPEI, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan has recorded 57,188 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases and eight new deaths from the disease, the island's disease monitoring agency announced Wednesday.

The eight deaths involved two male and six female patients, five of whom had not received vaccines against COVID-19, said the agency.

Taiwan has seen 86 deaths from the disease since this month, according to the agency's statistics.

Another 28 imported cases were newly reported in the region, the agency added.

As of Tuesday, more than 50,000 local students in Taiwan had been infected, including over 17,000 pupils, according to the island's education authority.

To date, Taiwan has reported 505,455 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Of these, 493,410 were local infections.
