JAKARTA, Indonesia - In a massive operation, the Indonesian navy is said to have found a ton of crystal meth hidden on a 'phantom ship.’
In the operation, an Indonesian naval ship patrolling the Phillip Channel between Singapore and Batam island intercepted a boat called the MV Sunrise Glory.
Inside the boat, the navy found 41 rice sacks, weighing 1,029kg (2,260lbs) however, the rice sacks did not contain rice - but a ton of crystal meth or methamphetamine.
Officials suspected the boat might be a Taiwanese fishing boat which had been a target of the Indonesian military since December for being a part of a drug syndicate.
According to local officials, the boat was flying the Singapore flag but changed it for an Indonesian one as it entered Indonesian waters and the navy patrol approached.
Officials added that upon discovery, the vessel was taken to Batam where it was searched and the drugs were found hidden inside the rice sacks.
In a statement, Navy deputy chief Vice Admiral Achmad Taufiqoerrochman said, "Last night we discovered more than one ton of crystal meth and the amount might increase because we have not finished checking everything."
Further, officials added that four Taiwanese crew members who claimed they did not know each other were arrested.
The crew members were reportedly carrying fake documents.
